If nothing helps significantly I would advice you to try a new install. You can change/tweak several settings to speed up your LinuxMint Cinnamon in general. This adblocker Ublock Origin does make your Firefox a bit heavier at first, but perhaps the absence of images makes it a bit faster in the end? Those wretched little videos on practically every site really make it gag. It chokes now at opening two or three tabs in Firefox. I have noticed it getting slower and the HD being busy and bogging down for long periods, mainly in connection with Firefox use/internet activity. It is the perfect size for work and traveling - I'd like to keep it as long as possible. I converted it to Mint after a couple years and it has served me very well.
